Amsterdam West is incredibly popular. In 2021, homebuyers even paid one of the highest prices per square meter in the city here. That West was originally built as a working-class neighborhood is therefore quite hard to imagine. The 'westside' is the area located west of the Singelgracht (the water at the Nassaukade). The Vondelpark forms the southern border of this district.
Amsterdam West was part of the nineteenth-century city expansion Plan Kalff-Niftrik (1877). Jacobus van Niftrik and Jan Kalff were two important urban planners at that time. The nineteenth-century belt, like other city expansions, was built as a semicircle (concentric) around the city. You might also notice that De Pijp, Staatsliedenbuurt, and Dapperbuurt were also part of this belt. Most houses were built through speculative or revolutionary construction. This meant that banks lent money to investors who built houses with it. The revolutionary construction was of very poor quality, as the investors were mainly out to make as much profit as possible.
The nineteenth-century belt was built in the polder area west of the city. Before the neighborhoods arose, the Singelgracht together with a city wall formed the boundary of the city. Through the Haarlemmer, Zaag, and Raampoort (the bridges in the image), you entered the city from the west side. This situation existed until 1858. As of 2022, the names of the current bridges still remind us of this situation, so take a bike ride along them!
