History of Amsterdam Zuidoost

Amsterdam Zuidoost is almost synonymous with the Bijlmer. The Bijlmermeer was built in 1966. Two years later, the first homes were completed. The history of the Bijlmer, and therefore Zuidoost, is quite interesting. The neighborhood was completely separate from Amsterdam. The neighborhood was built entirely from scratch.

Siegfried Nassuth and the Public Works Department enthusiastically embarked on this challenge. Separation of living, work, and leisure was one of the principles for the layout of the neighborhood. In Amsterdam itself, you see many businesses, shops, parks, and theaters mixed together. When building the Bijlmer, they thought it would be better for the residents if these were completely separated from each other.

Separation of car, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic was another principle for the design of the Bijlmer. The idea behind this strict separation was to prevent traffic accidents. With the large open green spaces and the above principles, the designers thought they had built a dream neighborhood. It was intended as a model neighborhood, but reality proved otherwise.

The well-intended principles of the neighborhood increasingly led to problems, for example: because all traffic was separated, there was also less social control. If you were walking somewhere, a car wouldn't pass by every 3 minutes. This made the neighborhood less safe.

The Bijlmer disaster was a turning point in the history of Zuidoost. A cargo plane crashed into a large apartment building, killing 43 people. From then on, the neighborhood began a large-scale update. Buildings were renewed, and more different types of housing were constructed. This resulted in much more diversity in the population.

Bijlmer is now truly coming into its own. The social problems are gradually decreasing, while the advantages of the green environment have remained. It seems that the Bijlmer has found its place after 60 years.

A metro station was later built in the Bijlmer. The video gives you an impression of what the Bijlmer used to look like.
