The Bezuidenhout district is located just north of the center of The Hague and is a highly sought-after district to live in. It is also very well accessible by public transport. In the Beatrixkwartier, the second office location in the Netherlands, you will find many modern offices and large multinationals. As previously mentioned, Bezuidenhout was named by the AD in 2020 as the most popular district in the Netherlands to live in, and this has a number of reasons. It is a quiet urban district with the center of The Hague within walking distance. In Theresiastraat you will find cozy shops and plenty of places for a nice meal and/or drink. The district also houses InHolland University of Applied Sciences and the Campus The Hague of Leiden University, so there are plenty of nice catering establishments for a younger audience. The beautiful Hague forest is within walking distance, so you won't be short of a piece of peaceful nature where you can walk or exercise.
The Bezuidenhout was once a place where peat was extracted. Peat was used as fuel at the time. The first buildings came to the Bezuidenhoutseweg in the form of country houses and farms. Around 1730, the Bezuidenhout grew into a neighborhood: Besuyenhouyts Buert.
In the nineteenth century, The Hague grew rapidly. Around 1850, plans were made to quickly build many houses. Construction continued until 1945. The buildings from that last period are recognizable by the styles of Nieuwe Haagse School and the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid.
Until World War II, many Jews lived in the Bezuidenhout. They made up about 14% of the population. Many Jews were deported. Still, the Bezuidenhout was overcrowded during the war. This was due to the bombing of Rotterdam and the evacuation of Scheveningen. All these people moved to the Bezuidenhout.
Large parts of the Bezuidenhout were bombed during the war by the Allies. It was a human error: the wrong locations for the bombs were taken. This cost more than 500 people their lives and meant that large parts of the area had to be rebuilt after the war. The plan for this was drawn up by the well-known urban planner Willen Dudok.
